His death record lists her as his mother, with the father unknown. Discussion in NB genealogy message boards by his direct descendants, indicate that he was the illegimate child of Janet Thurrott and a neighbour who owned a sawmill that she was babysitting for. There is uncertainty about who that is, both Thomas Carruthers and Thomas Cail are mentioned as likely possibilites.
