bullet  General Notes:

Although Frederick is listed as part of John and Mary MortonThurrott's family in the 1871 census, by the time he moved to Nova Scotia, he lists Janet (aka Jennie) Thurrott as his mother. His death record lists her as his mother, with the father unknown.
Discussion in NB genealogy message boards by his direct descendants, indicate that he was the illegimate child of Janet Thurrott and a neighbour who owned a sawmill that she was babysitting for. There is uncertainty about who that is, both Thomas Carruthers and Thomas Cail are mentioned as likely possibilites. Robert Spencer (Frederick's great-grandson) posted that he had pictures of both Thomas Cail and Frederick Thurrott and they looked almost identical, however both Cail and Carruthers owned a sawmill locally, and it could be either. 1 3
