Truthful Branding – Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama
It’s an interesting aspect of current Canadian politics, that most of us are far more interested in the current pre-election race between Clinton and Obama in the US, than we are in our own country’s leaders.

There is a perspective with some people that this is a good thing … that the US focus on newsworthy flash in their leadership races, is inferior to the more staid and boring Canadian way, that we end up with better leadership.
I don’t buy that. Our system has some advantages – in Canada the leader of the party with the most candidates elected named as Prime Minster, versus the American way is the separately elect the President no matter how their party does in the election. This means a smoother running system. What is also does however, is drain a lot of the visionaries out of the system. Yes, I miss Pierre Elliott Trudeau. You could hate him some days, and love him others, but you could never doubt that he had passion and vision.

Relating to passion and vision, ere’s some interesting quotes from an editorial in the New York Times…
… Hillary Clinton has been a much better senator than Barack Obama … If Clinton were running against Obama for Senate, it would be easy to choose between them. But they are running for president, and the presidency requires a different set of qualities …
But Trudeau is a topic for another day. Today I wanted to talk about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, the two main contenders for leadership of the US Democratic party, and thus two of the main contenders to be the next president of the United States.
Here’s the question I have been asking myself – are they truthful to their brands?
If you are at all interested in this question, I strongly recommend that you read this article on Daily KOS. When I started reading it, and she introduced her article by stating a lack of a belief in the “Obama hype”, I wasn’t sure hat to expect. Then I read further – the author has actually gone back and researched and reviewed all of the legislation that each of these two senators have introduced, support, and voted for. It’s an extremely interesting read.
… Obama and Clinton care about the same issues and have obviously worked together on a lot of legislation, whatever Sen. Clinton’s campaign may imply. She is a frequent co-sponsor on his bills, and he on hers. They are both completely competent senators …
I’m not going to tell you the author’s findings and decisions. I think this is one of this issues that shouldn’t be decided by 5 second sound bites. Read for yourself and see what you think.
Remember, truthful branding is not just about things you buy, it is about personal brands as well – yours, your friends, your co-workers, your politicians. Before you buy anything, including what any of these people are selling you, find out if they are true to their brand first.
