For an interesting geographical switch, earlier this year the JeanRichard Aquascope won the “sports professional watch” category in the “Watch of the year” award from Sekai no Udetokei magazine in Japan.

Sorry Louis Vuitton, there were a lot of contenders for this title for me in January 2011, but you won with the Tambour Diving II. Seriously, could you have made it look any more like a child’s watch?

Google Calendar

One more nail in the coffin of desktop applications has been the increasing use of Google systems – services or online apps instead of the old familiar loading of CDs.

I just updated a local NFP site to use Google Calendar for an online schedule. Easy, standard, sharable – what’s not to like? It was straightforward to include both an external link as well as to embed the calendar on the site.

There are a few negatives – it is off-site so you lose some tracking and analytics, and of course Google gains those. As well you have given up control and ongoing changes to another firm. Mind you, given the update frequency of most website apps, that’s probably a good thing!

Well, unusually for me, I’m faced with three versions of a watch and I can’t decide which one I like more.

Very nice new watch from IWC that will be shown at SIHH 2011, this definitely makes my “if I had a few more dollars” list :-)

I’ve always liked IWC’s Portofino line – clean, classic, and without the “look at me” artificial presence that many other brands feel they need these days. The model pictured is stainless body with silver dial. It also comes in a black dial version, and as well there is a red gold Portofino Hand-Wound Eight Days with a slate-coloured dial, which likewise features indices made of solid red gold.

For more info on releases as SIHH 2011 I recommend the updates at perpetuelle.com for a good summary.

Masonry in Afghanistan

A followup to my last post, since a few people asked about it from the picture of the site I used as an example, yes Canada has a Masonic Lodge in Kandahar, Afghanistan for our servicemen. It’s posted on the Waterloo district site (the one I just rewrote in WordPress) due to the tremendous support from local masons for our acting servicemen, and their interest in news from it. You can read more about it here. And the reason they are lying on the floor in this picture, is that the base was actually under potential attack/incursion at that time (no I do not know why they are laughing in this picture, probably embarrassed at the picture being taken then!)

Family Tree Update

Other than the discrepancy between sources I spoke about in a small part of the Steeves section, the rest is updated. I think there are about 5,700 or so names online in the family tree section of this site now. Yes it has taken a bit more time as a part-time intermittent hobby than I initially expected :-)
