Had a great time the other night seeing Marian and Scott playing a mini-concert at a local house venue here in K-W, as she heads back to Alaska on her 50-state (and several province) tour. Excuse the poor iPhone pic I didn’t think to take a camera with me :-(

Football Throw or Olympic Archer – which is more accurate?

In the spirit of North American holiday habits, let’s take a break from watches completely and talk about football.

If you had to choose which was more accurate at hitting the bulls-eye of an archery target from 20 yards away, would you pick an Olympic archer with a modern high-tech compound bow? Or an NFL footback quarterback throw of a ball? The answer might surprise you.

Avenue Q – “It Sucks To Be Me”

Coming locally (Centre In The Square in Kitchener) this November, I believe I have to see this show …

Okay, so we’re talking about a Broadway musical that has puppets, a “not for children” rating, a song titled “The Internet Is For Porn” and another titled “It Sucks To Be Me” making fun of a cross-gendered Gary Coleman.

No matter what else it’s going to skewer so many things I think people are going to laugh for sure (although I think you have to be a little into alternative or edgy shows to like this sort of thing, it’s not your parent’s Broadway).

Received a link to this little government “whoops”…

translation-error

When officials asked for the Welsh translation of a road sign, they thought the reply was what they needed. Unfortunately, the e-mail response to Swansea council said in Welsh: “I am not in the office at the moment. Send any work to be translated”. So that was what went up under the English version which barred lorries from a road near a supermarket.

It was not a good last week – layoffs. Hopefully temporary, but still not good.

I counted up the other day, and I’ve now been through 7 layoffs (yes, I worked in the software industry after Y2K and during the dot com bust). Three times as one of the people laid off, three times as the manager laying people off, and now twice as a survivor.

Online Comics – CFRH (a brief 1999-2007 retrospective)

Another quick digression from watches and marketing, into the world of online comics. College Roomies From Hell, by Maritza Campos, is one of those online comics that’s moved back and forth between mainstream and weird, depending on where the story goes. The antics of 3 guys who are roommates and their friends 3 girls who are roommates, sounds like an episode of Friends, until you start adding in the uber-rich mom with the basement torture chamber, the battle to fight Satanic demons, laser eye and sucker hand mutations, and other little side stories.

It’s been around for AGES in web time – the first strip in the archives is from January 1st, 1999. I’ve been reading it more or less regularly for most of that time, just missed the first year, save a few story arcs that went a bit too far into left space for my enjoyment, but I’ve always come back (unlike many other long-run web comics).

What’s interesting is seeing the change, or should I say growth and development, in her art skills over the years. The first 5 saw a lot of change, then it settle down to a fairly consistent look since then. Here’s a brief retrospective…
